Varmint 2: Dreams

For our second issue, the Varmint editorial staff will look for pieces that evoke the imaginative space of dreams, whether they be nightmarish or fanciful, liminal or full of portent. This expression may come in the form of dreams as they are found in sleep, waking dreams, hopes generally, or distant goals, but we hope to also come across pieces which feel dreamlike, that create dreams on the page, like dreaming of dreams. We leave it to you to surprise us!

$6 Fee

Each file submitted requires a $6 fee. Varmint was created to pay contributing artists, and this fee is how we intend to do that. Four of those five dollars will go into a pool of other submission fees, which will then be distributed evenly across the accepted pieces, paying an even share per piece. That means that the more an artist submits, that artist has a greater chance of being accepted, and a greater chance of being paid for each of their pieces. Even if an artist is not accepted, submitters can now that their submission fees went directly to paying an artist for their labor.

Of the remaining $2, one dollar is reserved to cover Varmint's cost of printing free copies for the general public, and to pay any fees for the programs we use to design our mag.

(The remaining dollar is unfortunately required by Submittable as a processing fee.)

General Guidelines

  • Please submit all pieces in separate, individual files. Remember to exclude any identifying information in order to maintain the integrity of our selection process.
  • Please submit all pieces as PDFs in a left-justified, 12 pt, serif font, or as a JPEG or PNG for visual artwork.
  • 3 page maximum per piece
  • 5 submission maximum per submitter

Style and Theme

Varmint is seeking fresh voices and original, potentially experimental styles. We do, however, also champion accessibility and readability. We welcome all pieces, but be aware that if the overall effect of your piece would be lost on the average reader, your piece stands a good chance of being denied. Please stay on theme, though this isn't to say the theme must remain uncomplicated. Reinterpret and redefine. Show us what we do not yet know about our own theme.
